Rule Changes and Clarifications

Translation and comments by David Fristrom, May 1993.

Um Reifenbreite is a new edition of the classic game Homas Tour. Since it is largely unchanged, the translation of the Homas Tour rules can be used with Um Reifenbreite. However, there have been a few changes noted below. Unless otherwise indicated, use the rules for Homas Tour. Also below are translations for the Chance Cards.

The rule sections below refer to the sections in the Um Reifenbreite rules.

Course Variants

Um Reifenbreite suggests the following courses, although you can of course design your own. Courses A and B are short races, and players should only use 7 Energy Cards (Strength Cards) each when playing them.

		Course type:	Cobblestone/Asphalt
		Route: Over finishes C, D
		Sprint: Finish D
		End: Finish A
		Sprint points:	1. = 11; 2. = 8; 3. = 5

	B. Luttich-Bastenaken-Luttich
		Start: Start 1
		Course type:	Asphalt/Mountain
		Route: Over finishes A, B
		Sprint: Finish B
		End: Finish C
		Sprint points:	1. = 11; 2. = 8; 3. = 5

	C. Giro d'Italia
		Start: Start 2
		Course type:	Cobbles/Asphalt/Mountain
		Route: Over finishes C, D, A, B
		Sprint: Finish D, A, B
		End: Finish C
		Sprint points
			D:	1. = 11; 2. = 8; 3. = 5
			A:	1. = 7; 2. = 5; 3. = 3
			B:	1. = 5; 2. = 4; 3. = 2

	D. Tour de France
		Start: Start 1
		Course type:	Mountain/Cobbles/Mountain
		Route: Over finishes A, B, C, E
		Sprint: Finish B, C, E
		End: Finish A
		Sprint points
			B:	1. = 11; 2. = 8; 3. = 5
			C:	1. = 7; 2. = 5; 3. = 3
			E:	1. = 5; 2. = 4; 3. = 2

The Colours of the Roads

In Um Reifenbreite, the level roads are cream, the roads with bad conditions (cobblestones) are blue-green, the ascents are red, and the descents are yellow.

5. Team division and Division of Strengths

In Um Reifenbreite, what Um Reifenbreite calls Strength (Krachten) Cards are called Energy Cards. Instead of being coloured blue and white, they are distinguished by the presence or absence of the "No Mountain" symbol (a mountain in a red circle). Where the Um Reifenbreite rules refers to blue cards, use the cards with the "No Mountain" symbol; where the rules refer to white cards, use the cards without the symbol. Similarly, the wildcard (joker) cards now have a picture of a joker instead of the "P" referred to in the Um Reifenbreite rules.

12. The Use of "Strength (Krachten)"

Buying a rider's way out of trouble

This section no longer applies; you can't avoid a lost turn by playing an Energy Card. However, some Chance Cards require you to discard an Energy Card. When that happens, you must if possible discard an Energy Card with the appropriate rider's number. If there are none left, you must discard a Joker. If there are none of those left, you don't discard and there is no additional penalty.

13. The Chance (Kanskaarten) Cards

See the translations of the Chance Cards below.

14. The Use of Stimulants

This rule has been replaced by a similar one involving getting an assist from a vehicle.

If you want to cheat in this manner, you roll one die and add six to it to get your move for the turn. Afterwards you must draw a Photo Card and the number on the card is noted on the score card, along with the number of the rider. The card is then shuffled back into the deck.

A rider can also get a larger assist, although the chances of being caught are much greater. The rider moves 12 spaces without rolling the dice. The player then draws a Photo Card, and the number is noted on the score card. The card is shuffled back into the deck, and the player must draw another card whose number is also noted.

A rider can cheat more than once in the race; every time one or two Photo Cards must be drawn and the number(s) noted.

At the end of the race, two Photo Cards are drawn. Every rider who has one of these numbers noted on the score card is caught and disqualified, and none of his points count. There is no appeal like in the Um Reifenbreite stimulants rule.

15. The Sprints and the Yellow Jumper

This rule is slightly different in Um Reifenbreite. As in Um Reifenbreite, points are given for coming in first, second, and third at the sprint lines. However, the points now vary from sprint to sprint; see the course descriptions at the beginning of this supplement.

The rule for the yellow jumper (probably better translated as yellow jersey or vest) is slightly different. As in Um Reifenbreite, the jersey initially goes to the rider who comes in first in the first sprint. Replace that rider with the yellow rider from the same team, and place the exchanged rider at the side of the board. (The rider with the yellow jersey is treated in all ways like the rider he replaces, using the same Energy Cards, etc. It's just a different playing piece representing the same rider.) For every subsequent round in which the rider wears the yellow jersey, he earns 2 points. Keep track of these rounds on the score card under the heading "Gelbes Trikot".

If the rider with the yellow jersey comes in first in the next sprint, he keeps the jersey. Otherwise, add up the points earned so far through sprints, not counting the points for wearing the yellow jersey. Whoever has the most points takes possession of the jersey; exchange the playing pieces appropriately.

For example, rider 21 wins the first sprint. He takes the yellow jersey and earns 11 points. The second sprint is won by rider 42. He earns 7 points for winning the second sprint. In the first sprint rider 42 earned 5 points (3rd place), so he now has a total of 12 points. Rider 21 wasn't among the top three riders in the second sprint, so he doesn't earn any points for it, and only has 11 points (he doesn't count the points he earned for wearing the yellow jersey). So rider 42 now has the yellow jersey.

When the first rider crosses the finish line, remove the yellow jersey (switching in the normal rider); points are no longer earned for it.

16. The Finish

The Stragglers

Um Reifenbreite does not have the rule about stragglers; continue the game until everyone is across the finish line.

17. The Score Pad (Forms)

The score card in Um Reifenbreite is laid out slightly differently from the score card in Um Reifenbreite, but is essentially the same. Look at the example in section 18 of the German rules, on the next-to-last page. Areas 1, 2, and 3 are used to record the results of the sprints. In each box, the first column gives the points earned for first, second, and third place; the second column ("Fahrer") is for recording the points earned for possession of the yellow jersey; and the last column ("Gesamt") is for the sum of the points.

The column labeled with a 4 in the example is for the numbers of the riders, showing their order of finish. Column 5 is for bringing over the riders' points for sprints and the yellow jersey (if any), while column 6 is for the sum of that rider's points. The riders' points are then transferred to the table labeled 7, and the team totals are calculated. Area 8 is for recording the numbers of the riders and their Photo Cards drawn when cheating.

18. The Professionals (for experienced players)

(2) Extra Points with "Escaping" (Professionals)

This rule giving extra spaces when "escaping" is not used in Um Reifenbreite.

(3) Organization of Stages

This rule for running multiple races is essentially the same in Um Reifenbreite, with one minor difference: when calculating the bonus for the rider with the highest score, multiply by the number of stages run, instead of by one less than that number. Thus, in the example, the result would be 6 x 161 + 319 = 1124 points.
